Shirley Jean Shelnut passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at her home in
Pensacola, Florida on October 11, 2021. She was 85 years old.
Born June 22, 1936 in Carbon Hill, Alabama to Lawrence Landrell Wilson and Virgie
Mahulda Allison Wilson Posey. Some of her fondest memories were growing up in the
Lindbergh coal mining camp 10-15 miles outside of Graysville, Alabama. She attended
West Jefferson and later Minor High School where she would meet her husband of 28
years Dale Shelnut. On August 9, 1954 they were married and had two sons Randy in
1955 and Andrew in 1959. She and Dale relocated from Birmingham, Alabama to
Pensacola, Florida where they would raise their family and become prominent figures
in the Southern Gospel Music industry. He was the lead singer for the legendary
Pensacola based Dixie Echoes Quartet and she worked by his side as the quartet’s
secretary for many years. To know her was to love her and her kind and loving heart will
be missed by all. She is survived by her children Randy (Paula) and Andrew, her
grandchildren Randy Shelnut Jr. (Penny), Katie and Jackson and great grandchildren
Drew, Lauren and Blake. She was preceded in death by her husband Dale and her
mother and father. Services will be held Thursday October 14, 2021 at Pensacola
Memorial Gardens 7433 Pine Forest Rd Pensacola, FL 32526. Visitation will be held at
1:00 p.m with the memorial following at 2:00 p.m. All arrangements have been made
through Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
