Sean Michael “Mike” Model of Santa Rosa County, Florida passed away on December 1, 2021.
Sean was born in Los Angeles in 1944 and spent most of his childhood in Englewood, California. His mother, Mary Margaret, preceded him in death when Sean was only nine years old. At that time, his grandparents and uncle placed him in St. John Bosco School for Boys, where he lived until graduation. It continues to be operated by the Salesian Brothers. After graduation, Sean entered the U.S. Navy where he became an aerographers mate (weather forecaster) and rose to the rank of Master Chief. He was also commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer (LDO).
During his years in the Navy, he married Naimanu Birdie and they had two sons: Sean Jr. and Leonard. They adopted a daughter Margaret in Alaska. Sean’s career in the Navy from 1960 to 1984 took him to Lakehurst, New Jersey; Point Magu, California; Kodiak, Alaska; the Philippines; Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; and on several WESTPAC cruises. He served on the USS Hancock when Saigon was evacuated at the end of the Vietnam War.
After retirement from the Navy, Sean went back to school and earned a Bachelor Degree from the University of West Florida, Masters from Southern Mississippi University, and Ph. D. from Indiana State University where he majored in weather and climate. In 1993, he began teaching at the University of West Florida in the Environmental Studies program through the early 2000’s. During that time, he met his second wife Nancy. They have been married 21 years.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Margaret, daughter Margaret Model, and first wife Naimanu.
He is survived by two sons Sean Jr. and Leonard (Claire); three grandchildren: Raine, Kayla and Justin, wife Nancy and stepson Kenneth.
A visitation will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Milton on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. until the funeral mass begins at 10:00 a.m.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Renalus, DaVita and Fresenius Kidney Care who attended to Sean’s medical needs over the last several years.

    Quite a Life. But his greatest accomplishment, by far, was marrying you, Nancy. What you have done to care for Mike over many years, in sometimes difficult circumstances, is probably not known to many , … I know.
