Larry Thomas McKenzie, Sr. • January 11, 2021

Larry McKenzie, age 82 of Pensacola, was called home to the Lord on Monday, January 11, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19. Larry was born on June 27, 1938, in Pensacola to Aulice and Annie Ruth McKenzie. He graduated from Tate High School in 1956 before working at Cyanamid/Cytec/Sterling as an analytical chemist in analytical development for 40 years. Larry was a devoted husband to his wife Shirley, to whom he was married for 60 years before she passed away in 2019.
Larry is survived by his four children — Larry (Tommy) McKenzie, Jr., Tammy Baker (Robert), Pamela Powell (Mark), and Mary Jane Turnipseed (Mike); and eight grandchildren, Lori Sumlin (Sam), Nick Baker (Audrey), Kimberly Baker, Murphy Powell, Campbell Powell, Patrick Turnipseed, William Turnipseed, and Josh Turnipseed. He was the proud great-grandfather of Sawyer Fynn Price and Samuel Wilder Sumlin. He is also survived by his brother Dick McKenzie and his sister Sue LaPierre, and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
Larry — otherwise known as Pawpaw — was a friend to everyone he met. Larry was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His faith and family sustained him. Larry had a way to bring a smile to everyone he met and lit up every room he was in. He loved people and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. In his retirement years, Larry enjoyed traveling with Shirley in their RV and going to foreign mission trips with her church family to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the Holy Land. Larry loved fishing, holding a good fish fry at his house, and traveling with his family around the country, from Key West, to the Grand Canyon, to San Francisco, up until his final days.
Larry was always moving, whether it was tinkering in the garage, baking in the kitchen, or dragging the main in downtown Pensacola. There was never a dull moment for him.
Above all, Larry loved life, the Lord, and his family, and lived each day to the fullest.
Larry was a member and a deacon at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church.

  1. Gerald Newman says:

I taught Larry when he was a student at Tate High School. Later, he was a client in my insurance agency. When he was around, the area always seemed light and enjoyable. it was always a pleasure to be in his company. After reading his obituary, it is certain that he will be missed by many.
