Keith Edward Brookes, age 81, died in his home Thursday night after a short battle with liver cancer.
Mr. Brookes is survived by two daughters and sons in law: Crystal and Shawn Ward and Katie and Roger Lastinger. He also had six loving grandchildren: Ty Ward, Angelique Calderon, Mario Brookes, Addison Ward, Isabella Brookes, and Gretchen Brookes.
Keith was known as a loving father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. His children cherish memories from childhood of his tall-tales from war and wild adventures. He will always be their hero. His love for his family was felt by all.
He is preceded in death by his wife: Judith Brookes, Son: Edward R. Brookes, Father: Edward K. Brookes, Siblings: Garnett Rehill and Charles “Dickie” Brookes, Uncle: Harry Brookes, and Grandparents: Edward A. Brookes and Anna J. Brookes (Mom and Pop Brookes).
Keith is a veteran of the Vietnam War, during which he served four tours. For his service, he earned two Purple Hearts. He served honorably in the Marines for 29 years, achieving the rank of 1stSgt.
Keith’s experience in the Marines played a very important role in his life. He frequently pointed out that the Marines taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself. This is something he instilled in his children as well. These values contributed to his success as a Detention deputy. He served Escambia County for 10 years, achieving the rank of Corporal.
The viewing will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens on Monday March 29, 2021 from 1-2pm, funeral service at 2pm, followed by a military burial where Keith will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife.
