Mrs. John Edith Peterson
November 7, 1930 – April 22, 2021
On April 22, 2021, John Edith “DeeDie” Peterson was called home after 90 years of good and faithful service to God, her family, and her community. She will be remembered as a loving, caring, dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, dedicated Christian, and proud member of Gonzalez Baptist Church from 1974.
DeeDie was born on November 7, 1930 in Lockhart, Alabama to John Hamilton Shows and Bessie Livingston. She was the fourth of seven children. Employed by the regional lumber trade, the Shows family moved from place to place in Alabama and Northwest Florida, finally settling in Pensacola, FL. DeeDie graduated from Pensacola High School in 1948 where she was a proud member of the Rainbow Girls.
DeeDie met the love of her life, Elden Dean “Pete” Peterson, while Pete was serving in the U.S Navy at Whiting Field. The couple were married in 1950 at the Shows private residence. Once Pete was discharged from the U.S. Navy, the couple decided to remain in Pensacola and continue to maintain their community membership, to this day.
DeeDie’s greatest passion was first and foremost her Christian faith and family. Her other interests included gardening, hospitality, teaching, and visiting with close friends and family.
DeeDie’s faith was central to her life and spread through those, whose lives she touched. She was a long-time member of Gonzalez Baptist Church where many of her family were introduced to Jesus, her loving Savior. She enjoyed her service to the church, teaching Sunday school, participating in vacation bible school, and served as a secretary for several years prior to retiring from church employment.
DeeDie’s intermittent professional career activities included self-employment and several secretarial positions including the State of Florida as a professional secretary.
DeeDie will forever be loved and remembered by her children; Vanus Lewis Peterson, Clinton Dean Peterson, Linda Gail Lassiter, Paul Vincent Peterson, Ruth Ann Patterson, Leslie Roy Peterson, David Clark Peterson, Victoria Marie Smolik, Dabrianna Ann Peterson, their spouses, as well as many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Much of her life involved introducing faith through Christian services throughout her community and mostly her family. She loved to sing hymns as she did house work, read her Bible daily and share her knowledge with her family throughout their years into adulthood.
A public celebration of DeeDie’s life will be held with her immediate and extended family and friends on Monday, April 26 at Gonzalez Baptist Church, 11:00 AM. Pastor Mike Mashburn and John Oglesby officiating. There will additionally be a viewing and visitation the night before from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, also at Gonzalez Baptist Church.
A special thank you to The Blake memory care facility, Baptist Hospital, and Emerald Coast Hospice for the care they provided to DeeDie and her family in her final months. For those who would like to send flowers or any monetary donations in her memory, please send to Gonzalez Baptist Church, 1590 Pauline Street, Cantonment, FL 32533.
