Helen C. Laird

The soul of longtime Pensacola resident, Helen Laird, 93, departed this world on December 16, 2020. She is absent from her body but in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Helen was born in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Young Helen Callie Mason was the sixth of ten children born to Willie Green Mason and Mary Logwood Mason. Soon after WWII, Helen married the love of her life –a young soldier from Pensacola, Florida, Louis Laird (deceased). Helen and Louis lived in Pensacola and raised a family of four children (Don, Roy, Mary, and Joyce).
Helen was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. She served her family in the roles of teacher, mentor, taxi-driver, cook, seamstress, bill-payer, nurse, spiritual leader, and cheerleader, to name a few. Helen was the glue that held everything together in the Laird family. Her children would concur, “Mom, you did well!!!”
She was a charter member of Bellview United Methodist Church and was always faithful to her Lord. For years, Helen served outside the home as room-mother at Bellview Elementary School. She and Louis also spent untold hours serving in the Myrtle Grove Youth Association.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Laird; all four of Louis’ brothers and their wives; and seven of her siblings. Surviving siblings are her sister, Clara Crouch (Virginia) and her brother, Guilford Mason, and his wife, Sally (Tennessee). She is also survived by several nieces and nephews who adored their Aunt Helen. Deceased life-long friends include: Syble Murphy and Juanita McDaniel. Surviving best friend and former neighbor is Betty Hamilton (Georgia).
Helen was preceded in death by son Don’s first wife, Wanda Lou Laird and is survived by her four loving children and their spouses:
Donald Laird (Wanda Gayle) of Wetumpka, AL, Roy Laird (Sandi), Mary Laird Waters (Jim), and Joyce Laird, all of Pensacola, FL.
Helen doted on her surviving four grandchildren and six great grandchildren: Nathan Laird (Allison) and their children, Avery and Genevieve of Roswell, Georgia; Mason Laird (Elizabeth) and their children, Henry, Roy, and baby girl Laird (to be born May, 2021) of Washington, D.C.; Shannon Brock and her children, Amber and Haley of Pensacola, FL; and, Travis Waters of Mobile, AL.
Helen was always most grateful to her neighbors for assisting her over the years: Rick and Tina Roberts; and, Tony and Helen Foster. Many thanks to all the members of Bellview United Methodist Church for their prayers and acts of kindness.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December. 21, 2020, at Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 11:00 to 11:20 a.m. in the Chapel.
