Flora Garrett • May 4, 2022
Flora H. Garrett, the daughter of Lucian Paul and Nancy Jane Huddleston was born on a very hot July day in 1930. She grew up in a wonderful community near Heidelburg, MS and graduated high school in 1947. The family life was centered around church activities and the farming that sustained the families. Flora has two sisters who are living. Patricia White (Roy) and Bernadine Hankins. She has two brothers, Welton Huddleston and David Huddleston and one sister, Kathlyn Bustin who are deceased.
As a young adult, she met and married William Garrett. They had one daughter together Nancy M. Garrett. They were married for fifty years. Flora brought to this new family one daughter from a previous marriage, Lavanda Russell (Mac) William had three sons from a previous marriage, W. Rayford Garrett, Donald A. Garrett deceased (Wilda), and T. Joey Garrett (Gloria). The marriages of William’s sons brought Mama and Daddy much happiness and produced many beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren that they cherished, prayed for and lovingly supported in activities. Their daughter had one child; Lindsay Thompson (Commander Paul Thompson). Lindsay and her husband have three children, Mariah, Michael and Henry. Although Daddy did not live to see these babies, Mom adored them and was waiting in great hope that she would be with them again when they return to the USA. As we know, the good Lord had other plans for her. In addition to the family already mentioned Mom and Dad have many nieces and nephews that they loved dearly.
Our mother was brought up in a loving Christian family and did her best to live her life accordingly. She always worked outside the home contributing to the needs of the family in all respects. She was smart, determined, and hardworking devoting many years of her life to the Woolworths/Woolco Corporation retiring as a Food Service Manager in Pensacola, FL.
During their retirement years she and William worked together participating in activities at Myrtle Grove United Methodist Church. They loved their church family and they took great pleasure in taking trips organized by the church. They also worked together in all activities of the church through out their lives. In recent years, Mom was troubled by her inability to attend church. Fortunately, her church family never forgot her. They were diligent in bringing her special gifts and gift baskets, sending her cards, and the church Newsletter. Mom especially enjoyed all those sweet telephone calls from Pastor Riley. She was always so thrilled to hear from anyone from her church family. She was especially thrilled this year when she was one of the ladies of her church to receive the Suzanna Wesley award for mentoring and 40 years of service to her church.
