Duren Bruce Ensley, Jr., 93, died on February 13, 2020 in Pensacola, Florida. He was born on
December 26, 1926, in Asheville, North Carolina, the son of Nell Ensley and Duren B. Ensley,
Sr.
Bruce’s career in the Air Force spanned 34 years, serving in World War II and the Korean
Conflict. Bruce and his devoted wife Betty of 68 years, along with their two daughters, were
able to travel the world through numerous tours of duty. During his retirement years, he built
his own airplane, and enjoyed flying it in the mountains. “Papa Bruce” was dearly loved by his
family – especially his granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Nell Ensley and Duren B. Ensley, Sr., his infant
son, Richard Bruce, his brothers, Petey Ensley, Reed Ensley, his sisters, Kathleen Gilbert,
Joann Swain, Ruby Sams, and Gail Merrit.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Ensley of Pensacola, Florida, his daughters, Deborah
Civello (David) of Lebanon Junction, Kentucky, Cathy Hamilton (Bill) of Cantonment, Florida.
He is also survived by his granddaughters, Lisa Civello (Carl) of Louisville, Kentucky, Julie
Civello of Louisville, Kentucky, and Lindsay Sullivan (Chris) of Clear Springs, Alabama, as well
as his great grandchildren, Bailey Sullivan, Ty Sullivan, and Mia Civello. He is survived by a special Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, James and Wanda Norton, of Defuniak Springs, Florida, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks goes to the nurses, CNAs, dietary and housekeeping staffs at Willowbrook
Court in Pensacola.
A visitation from 12:30-1:30 p.m. will be held on Thursday, February 20, at Pensacola Memorial
Gardens and Funeral Home, 7433 Pine Forest Road, Pensacola, Florida 32526, with Chaplain
Jim Dietz as celebrant.
A funeral cortege will then depart for internment services at Barrancas National Cemetery at
2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Dementia Society of America.
