Bettye White • June 26, 2020

Bettye Hurd White, 84, passed away Friday, June 26, 2020.

Bettye was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Warren Hurd and Ione Scarborough Hurd on November 1, 1935. She met and married an Air Force pilot, Dewey B. White of Wallace, Alabama, and they moved to Pensacola in 1954. She was a devoted mother of five children, and was known for her cooking and sewing skills. Although she always participated in church family activities, she only began to live a life of her own after the children were grown.

Bettye was an active member of the Pensacola Federation of Garden Clubs, creating artistic flower arrangements and winning ribbons, eventually meeting qualifications to become a judge. She was a leader in the Daylily Sprouts, a children’s club, teaching about gardening and the art of flower design. Bettye loved learning and surprised all by taking lessons for piano, ballet and watercolor painting later in life. As an artist, she participated in Plein Air Painters of Pensacola, and enjoyed entering her work in shows. As she slowed down, she worked more at home, drawing and sketching and crocheting. Her afghans became works of art in themselves. And through it all, she was a voracious reader!

Bettye was a member of Charity Chapel and lived a life of service to her Lord as well as her family and community. She volunteered at Safe Harbor in its early years as Sav-A-Life, was on the board, and served as director for a time.

Bettye was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son Gary, who passed in 1971.

She is survived by two brothers, Lee and Richard, and her sister, Ann Smith; her sons, Steven (Beverly), Michael, and Jonny (Marseilles), and daughter, Venieta (Doug) McLeod. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

  1. Bill and June Turner says:

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Just know that to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord. Mrs. White is no longer dealing with her earthly infirmity. God grant you peace.

  2. Jerry Ireland says:

Betty & her husband Dewey are two of the finest people that God created. Both of them had servant’s hearts and served God all of their lives. Heaven is sweeter now and I look forward to seeing them again.
