Barbara Joyce Burkes passed away Monday, November 22, 2021, at age 89. She was born in Columbus, Georgia. She met the love of life, Mike, at Southern Bell in Columbus, where she worked as an assistant chief telephone operator. They married August 17, 1956, and lived throughout the south while Mike worked for Western Electric (AT&T). They finally settled in Pensacola in 1960 and built their home that see resided in until her death.

Barbara was a loving wife and mother that enjoyed gardening, baking, candy making, and sewing. She liked traveling all over the United States in their motorhome and listening to country and bluegrass music. As her own children got older, she especially relished playing with and keeping her grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Tullis Jacobs and Neta Spann Jacobs; three sisters, Bama Jacobs, Lenora Hightower, and Carmie Camp; and one brother, Jerry Jacobs.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Richard Burkes; four children, Donna (Donnie) Pugh, Rhonda Burkes, Mike (Sandy) Burkes II, Debora (Bill) Gormley; five grandchildren, David (Brooke) Pugh, Rachel (Ben) Losier, Alexandra (Thomas) Skinner, Matthew Burkes, and Connor Gormley; two great grandchildren, Genevieve Pugh and Madelyn Pugh; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens on Friday, November 26, 2021, at 1:00pm-2:00pm, with graveside immediately following.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Gormley, David Pugh, Ben Losier, Thomas Skinner, Matthew Burkes, and Nick Echoff.
Honorary pallbearers will be C. E. Ballou, Luke Camp, and Donnie Pugh.

    Please forgive us for not being able to be there today. Our prayers are with you especially Mike, Rhonda and Rachel. Don has been sick for 10 days or more.
